TOMS Shoes.
So a few weeks ago I was watching the usual Today show in the morning with Matt, Meredith, Al and Anne, and they were talking about an organization called TOMS Shoes.
TOMS Shoes is a perfect example of a social business. I always thought the shoes were named after a guy named Tom, but TOMS is actually an abbreviation of "Tomorrow's Shoes". TOMS is based on a simple concept: For each pair of shoes sold, a pair is donated. Founder, Blake Mycoskie conceived his trademarked "One-for-One" business model on a trip to Argentina, when as a volunteer on a shoe drive, he witnessed how a simple pair of shoes could change a child's life. Four years later, TOMS shoes has given away more than 400,000 pairs of shoes and laid the foundation for a new form of business he calls "conscious capitalism."
SHOES...can you imagine not having a pair? Can you imagine walking barefoot everywhere? Imagine how tough your feet would be. Imagine how cut up they would. Imagine the possible foot infections. Think about all the shoes you have in your closet that you probably don't even wear. Think about how valuable your feet are to you.
I have been eying these shoes for years, first at Macys and then at Nordstrom. I think it is an incredible concept and slightly justifies spending the $45 on a pair of shoes because in the process of buying one pair you are buying a pair for another, for a child in need. One for One. This truly is a unique and beautiful concept, and even though I have been watching my pennies and not shopping really at all, it actually makes me want to go out and buy a pair of TOMS right now!
Blake ended his interview on the Today show by saying this generation of young people was going to change the world and change how business is done. After hearing that chills ran through my whole body, and I thought this is TRUE! We are going to change the world, one day at a time, and one pair of shoes at a time.
