Eating Solids.

It's true - this guy is eating solids.

He has been eating them for a few weeks now.  He has been waking up alot over the past month, and eating alot at night, and after calling Jack's Dr., they stated what we already knew, the child was hungry.  And they encouraged us to start him on solids.

So we did.  And we had high hopes that it might help him sleep longer at night.  But it didn't.

However, we have been having fun introducing all sorts of new items to his diet. We first started with rice cereal, and we have since added banana, sweet potatoes, and avocados.  And it's funny to see that he definitely has preferences already.

And I am having fun making his baby food.  I don't know why more people don't do this!  Or maybe they do? Homemade baby food is so easy - why bother with the store bought stuff in jars.  Yes, it takes time, but once you make a batch of something you can just freeze it and pull it out when you need it. And I'm sure it's cheaper, and this way you know exactly what is going into your babies mouth!

But I'm sure it's not for everyone, just like cloth diapers aren't for everyone.

However, some things are really easy and just require mashing and mixing - like bananas and avocados.  I have a baby food cookbook, but there are loads of recipes online on various websites - Check out Weelicious and Wholesome Baby Food.

...and some things require just a bit more of an effort.  I baked the sweet potato and then put it in my food processor with a little bit of breast milk and pureed away.  I think put a dollop into my little container and put it in the freezer. You can use ice cube trays to store the food too!  I haven't done that yet, but I'm sure I will.

All in all, he's a great eater.  He loves meal times - he gets so excited with anticipation when we put him in his chair. He kicks his legs and waves his hands, and opens his little mouth!  Love him.

So let's see, he loves bananas - and he wasn't a fan of sweet potatoes until I mixed them with bananas. I must say though this whole eating solids things has definitely been interesting on his digestive system. Sometimes the poor little guy seems so uncomfortable, grunting away, trying to work something out, or crying because his tummy hurts. So we have tried to make his actual food portions much smaller, and we give him his non rice cereal meal earlier on in the day, and it seems to be making a difference.  And his poops have definitely changed - they are much more solid (sorry for the extra info!!), which makes cloth diapering a little easier to be honest.

Can't wait to add a few more items to this little man's diet!  Some photos from his eating endeavors.

He's in position and ready to eat.

Until next time,

Malia
